The name of Hydra is due to the abundant water that gushed from the rich sources that had in antiquity. Historians mention the island by the name Hydrea and the interior of the island are preserved traces of ancient settlements, as evidenced by archaeological excavations at Episkopi.
The first inhabitants were the Dryopes. The town of Hydra is built on two low rocky hills around the port. The harbor is nowdays filled with cruise boats.
Main feature of Hydra is that there are no cars, so people move only by donkeys, which makes the island unique as a destination and one of the seven cities in the world that banned automobiles.
